0 W. H. EYES, ESQ., J.P., M.P.C. In consequence of the Division of this Province into two Electoral Districts for the House of Representatives, it becomes necessary to elect a Second Member. We, the undersigned electors of the District of Wairau, therefore, request that you will allow yourself to be put in Nomination as the Member for this District in the House of Representatives, and we pledge ourselves to use our utmost efforts to ensure your return, in the event of your Election being contested. Hewitt Thomas Wall John Dempsey James H. Greig John Poore Daniel Peddic George Watson W. B. Earll Zachariah Bunn To G. M'Rae, Esq., and the other Electors signing the above requisition. Gentlemen—Upon receipt of your very flattering requisition, asking me to allow myself to be put in nomination as the Member of the House of Representatives for the District of Wairau, I had some little difficulty in making up my mind how to answer it. That difficulty arose, not from any unwillingness to serve you, but from a disinclination to oppose our late Member (supposing that gentleman to offer himself as a candidate for this district), entertaining, as I do, a high respect for him, although many recent acts of the present Ministry, of importance to us locally, do not meet with my approval. But, upon inflection, it appeared to me that should Mr. Weld seek the suffrages of his former supporters in this province for re-election to the House of Representatives, he should have the honour of representing the District of Picton, containing, as it does, the Capital of the Province. There cannot be a doubt of his return for that district, and, as an elector there, I should certainly give him my warmest support. I have, therefore, much pleasure in acceding to your request. My principles are pretty well known to most of you, and I shall, I hope, have many opportunities before the day of election of personally explaining any matters which may appear at all doubtful to you. In the meantime, I can only promise that if elected as your representative, no exertions of mine shall be wanting to advance the interests of the Colony generally, and of this portion in particular; and I trust that the political relations which already exist between us may bo more firmly eemented. Thanking;you, gentlemen, for the great confidence you-wouta: repose in me, I beg to subscribe'myself I our most obedient servant, W. H. Eyes, Taylor Valley, 30th November, 1860. 464 TO the Publishers of the Marlborough ■ Press. ' Gentlemen'—Our names having been signed to a requisition for Mr. Weld, we have t 0 request that you will not publish * them after receiving this notice, as we have withdrawn our signatures from that requisition, having been induced to it upon misrepresentation. & William Bryclon, Donald M'Callum, Isaac Gifford, John Hilbourne, James Pike, James 11.
