LOCAL NEWS.

The Late Flood. —The continuance of rain daring last Saturday, Sunday, and the early part of the week, increased the flood we alluded to in our last, and the rivers rose higher than they had done for some years. At one time it was almost impossible to go any distance up the Plain. The flood was at its height about noon on Wednesday, and since then the rivers have continued to fall, and are now very little higher than usual at this " season. It was, of course, impossible to make use of the punt for crossing the Omaka, but a ferry boat plied constantly until yesterday, when the punt was .again brought into service. We have not heard of any damage by the flood, except what avc mentioned last week. It is certainly no matter of surprise that after heavy rains such as we have now had for more than a week, the roads should be almost impassable, in a country that has no made road nor drain, and is yet in its primitive state. We may now, however, hope for some improvements

to bo made, and we believe that as soon as the. works can be prosecuted with advantage tliey will be’ commenced. The City of Nelson put into Picton, on her way from Otago to Nelson, on Thursday, the 24th ultimo, and sailed the next day, taking Mrs. Downes and daughter as passengers.—The Mary, from Nelson, called on Monday, the 28th ultimo, and discharged part of her cargo. She sailed next day for Wairau. A considerable depth of water covered that portion of the Pictbn road round the Tua Marina swamp, causing, however, very little damage, considering the unfinished state of the road.
