DECIMAL COINAGE.
The motion brough forward in the Federal House of Representatives last month by Mr G. B. Edwards (South Sydney for the adoption by the House of the report of |the Decimal Coinage Committee, was carried by a majority of one (19 votes to 18) in a thin House, the minority including all the Ministers. The Select. Committee on Coinage advised that even if the Mother Country did not move in the matter Austi-alia should adopt the following decimal system :—Coins as at present. Gold: Sovereign equals 10 florins and ; 1,000 cents. Gold: Half sovereign equals 5 florins and 500 cents. Silver : Florin equals 100 cents. Silver: Half-florin (shilling) equals 50 cents. Silver : Quarter-florin (sixpenc.-) equals 25 cents. Coins to be altered. Mixed : Tenth of florin (2.4 d) equals 10 cents. Bronze ; Four cents [o.96d] —25 to [florin. Bronze : Two cents [0.48d] —oQ to florin. Bronze : One cent [0.24d)* —100 to florin. * "If in xVustraliji it is not at present thought necessary to go Delow the substitute for the half penny, the 1-cent piece need not be coined."
