THE FARMERS AND LIQUOR LEGISLATION.

According to statistics quoted in the Legislative Council by the Hon ir Trask *in discussing the Tied Houses Bill there was last year laid down in barley in this colony an aggregate ai-f-a of 26,514 acres, which yielded 856,993 bushels of grain. The approximate value of this would be .£171,000.. The area planted in hops in Nelson alone covered 844 acres, yielding some- 35,000 bales, representing in value .£52,500. Both these industries would, Mr Trask contended, be seriously injured by legislation such as was proposed by the mover of the Tied Houses Bill. Much of the liind utilised by farmers for barley growing would not grow anything else profitably. He entered a protest against the interests of these farmers being jeopardised by one-sided, unjust legislation.
