Mr J. T. McCutcheon, the American caricaturist, has just been engaged by the New York Tribune on a three years' contract for " 20,000 dollars a year for drawing one cartoon a day. Miss Nellie Stewart, of Musgrove's C vmedy Company, has donated 20 guineas to the Wellington Hospital. Rumour says that a large sum of money will be asked to be expended xm the tourist and health resorts of the colony before* next year. Potatoes, of the "Pintus Forerum" variety, grown at Palmerston South, weighed on an average 2lb 13oz each. It is said that "bullets fired at Paardeberg" are being made by the hundred thousand in German factories, for sale on the Continent. Mr John Muir, of Leith, Scotland, announces that lie ha* invented a pro cess whereby tanned pigskins are made ,-is a substitute for rubber tyres. The pigskins so treated are stated 1o wear longer than rubber, and Mr Muir is said to have sold the American rights of his process for £1,000,000. An interesting decision has been given by Mr Barton, S.M., at Gisborne. Nelson Bros, and Co. were sued by a former employee for- the recovery of a week's w;iges, which it has been agreed should be kept in hand and be liable to forfeiture should plaintiff be absent from work without leave or misconduct himself. - The Magistrate decided that the 1 etention of the wages was contrary to the Truck Aofc 1891, and its amendments, and he gave judgment against Nelson Bros.
