To show what can be done with lucerne in this colony, a farmer living near Napier has seven cows to keep on 8 J acres of lucerne, and from the factory for his milk alone he received £l3 pet cow for the twelve months, his only being day for a fortnight. The lucerne gave three to four cuttings and was fed part as hay, and part green. The lucerne being mixed with the lucerne hay no doubt did much to keep up the milk supply. The Shops and Offices Bill, which the Government has re-introduced this session, represents an important departure from last yeat's Bill, inasmuch as it provides that the weekly half holiday shall be on Saturday. Clause 7of the Bill reads:—Except as hereinafter specially provided, every shop shall be closed not later than one o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday in every week, and shall remain closed for the remainder of the day. There have been erected at the Kaiapoi woollen mills eighteen of the fastest and most up to date looms. The looms were made by Mr G. In other respects the wool scouring plant in the mills has been added to. To relieve the mill from night, working, a larger washing, milling.and falling,plant has been introduced, and an additional set of fast milling stocks. A considerable addition has been made in the buildings, inclusive of a room for anew tentering machine, for hosiery making, as well as extensions to other departments.
