THE NEW MINISTER.
A new minister in a Scotch kirk had reas-ori.tb complain of the poorness of the collections, and intimated to one of the elders that unless things improved he would have to resign the post. "Ay, mon," said the elder, "they are close, vera close. But." he added confidentially, "the auld ineenister he used to pit three or four saxpences into the plate himsel' just to gie them a start. Of coorse," he added, "he took his saxpences awn' wi' him after.vards."
The new minister agreed to try the same plan, and the next time he saw the elder he had to report a decided failure. The total collection was 8s 6d, and he was grieved to add that three out of the four sixpences were missing. "Ay mon," said the "elder, "ye may be a better preacher than the auld meenister, but if ye'd half the worldly knowledge that he had, and of yer ain flock in parteekular, ye'd ba ; done as he did and glued the saxpences to the plate."
