VOLUNTEER BALL.

This annual function, instituted shortly after the Motueka Mounted Rifles came into existence has al.vays been looked forward to as a pleasurable occasion, not only for members of the corps, but also for their friends and.the residents throughout the Motueka district. On Wednesday evening the weather was delightfully fine and clear and naturally the Institute was the centre of attraction. The gallery was crowded with spectators and on the Soar, which was in excellent condition, there were about forty couples, who spent a delightful time, the programme being exhausted and a nurabe" of extra dances indulged in, the company sep arating about half past two o'clock on Thursday morning. There was a good muster of officers and men and Sergeant-Major. Redmond, the drill instructor, was also present. Capital music was supplied by the String Band and Lieutenant Batchelor and Sergeant, Chittenden efficiently discharged the responsible duties of Masters of Ceremonies. An excellent supper was provided, their being an abundance of good things, the catering having been entrusted to Mr and Mrs W. Ryder. The hall was decorated for the occasion with flags, ferns and holly, and accoutrements, the handiwork of the Committee and the capable Hon. Secretary, Corporal Manny, to whom a word of praise is accorded for their efforts to make the fixture the success it proved to b©.
