The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Ora Mota Iwi.” FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1903.
The total cost of the memorial at the Motueka Wharf is 15s 4d, and the amount collected to date is .£29 Is Bd, leaving a balance of L 8 13s 8d owing. In ordei to wipe off this deficiency as speedily as possible, we would suggest the holding of a concert or social. We are inclined to the belief that few persons in the district would refuse to buy a shilling ticket to help the Committee to discharge the debt. If anything is to be done there is no time like the present. Whitebait were caught last week in a stream running out of Lake Ellesmere (Canterbury) into the sea. They probably constitute the earliest catch on record. Mr Guy Johnson, manager of the ( well known firm of merchants and shipping agents, Messrs Johnston and Co, of Wellington, has been visiting Motueka. The tickets for the social and danca to be held on the 29th instant, in aid of the funds of the Motueka Cricket Club are now issued and we are informed are meeting with a ready sale. ; The only Cemetery Board business transacted last Tuesday was the adoption of the minutes and the passing of a .->mall account. We have to acknowledge the receipt of a sample of oatsheaf chaff from Cheviot. It came inside a copy of the News, sent to us as an exchange. The chaff is of bright color, and we should say averages about 22 bags to the ton. We thank our contemporary for his kindness and beg to inform him that there will be no sale here for any of it this season. Messrs Gray and Parker's representative will visit Motueka next Monday and Tuesday. On looking over the list of subscriptions to the memorial to fallen troopers and peace celebrations, unveiled on Wednesday afternoon we noticed an item on the debit side "refund of subscription, one shilling." On asking the meaning of this extraordinary item, we were informed that the donor deman ded his "bob" back because he was afraid the memorial would never be erected ! That man is not the man to bury his talent in the earth. The piece of silver has got to return him something. Messrs Freeman R. Jackson and Co. teporton their Tuesday's Jonnsonville sale as follows :—A full entry of bullocks of good quality was above requirements, and bidding was slow. Beef made 25s per lOOlbs ; best bullocks, L 9 2s 6d ; others LB' 12s to L 9 ; light LB. A full yarding of sheep came forward. The quality was nearly all second class. Competition was keen Best wethers 16s lid to 17s; others 15s; best ewes 15s Id to 16s ; others 14x lid : light ewes lis lOd. For Bronchial Cough, take Woods t Great Peppermint Cure, Is 6d and 2s 6d everywhere.
