The Kumara Times says :—A very interesting sight was noted in Church Street the other day. Several young ladies identified with the congregation, were busily employed in painting the new fence in front of the Wesleyan Church. It appears that they collected the money necessary for the material from their friends, and then anxious to do something in the way of beautifying the Connexional property, made up their minds to do the work themselves, and so some six or eight of them were seen this morning cleverly using the paint brush. Murray, Roberts and Co., of Wellington, report as follows concerning the wool and skins sale held last Friday : —Our catalogue comprised 30 bales wool, mostly odd lots, and about 1800 sheepskins, the wet weather probably preventing larger quantities of skins coming forward. Many of the skins now coming in are in damp condition. Prices ruled on a par with last sale, and we quote values as follows : Wool—Medium to fine crossbred, 4fd to s|d per lb ; coarse to medium crossbred 4d to 5d per lb ; lambi 4d to 5d ; crutchings 2|-d to 2|d per lb ; locks and pieces Ifd to 2|d lb. Sheepskins— Merinos 4|d to 6f d lb ; crossbred, fine, 4|d to sgd ; crossbred, coarse to medium 4d to 5d ; dead and hoggets 2|d to 3|d lb •. lambs, 4|d to s|d per lb. At the meeting of the Auckland City Council on Thursday a letter was read from Mr Wm. Richardson,, asking for a return of the £lO he forfeited by failing to poll the requisite number of votes in his candidature for the Mayoralty at the recent election. He made the application on the grounds that had he polled 31 more votes his deposit would not have been forfeited, and that owing to the arrangements for taking the poll-being inadequate, hundreds of people went away without voting. The Mayor moved that the request be declined, and the motion was unanimously adopted, without discussion. A conference of delegates srom local bodies was held at Pukekohe, Auckland, last week, to consider the proposed erection of an- infectious diseases hospital near Auckland. The following resolutions were carried unanimously :—" That in the opinion of this j meeting of local bodies outside of a j 12 mile- radius an infectious diseases j hospital in Auckland is of no benefit to { the districts we represent, inasmuch as it would be dangerous to the health of the patient to remove him to such a distance." " That this meeting favors Dr Mason's statement that as the outside Boards would not get. value out of 1 the hospital, he would be quite willing that they should stand out, and, as in \ Wellington, pay only for patients sent ; in, and this meeting asks that this recommendation be given effect to."
