RIVER IMPROVEMENT.
A largely attended meeting of residents of the Lower Moutere was held in the Jubilee Hall last night, Mr L. D. Easton in the chair, to consider the proposed manner of carrying out the work of improving the outlet of the Moutere river. Messrs Beuke and Everett, members for the ridings interested, attended by invitation. Mr S. B. Canavan, the convener of the meeting, explained the object of the gathering and suggested that MrEverett should give some particulars as to what had been done by the Waimea Council at its last session. Mr Everett gave a detailed account of what had transpired and also of an interview he had with the Engineer, Mr Littlejohn. The plans were then produced and after considerable discussion, in which Messrs Edwards, Beuke, Everett, Tannant and several others took part, a deputation consisting of Messrs Canavan, M. Hyland, and T. Tannant was appointed to meet the engineer on the ground, in conjunction with Messrs Everett and Beuke.
The following resolutions were passed : —That the deputation to .vait on the Engineer repiesent that in the opinion of this meeting the bank on the eastern side is too strong and requires modification, and that the bank on the western side requires strengthening from point S on the plan. Second, That the deputation represent that this meeting suggests the straightening of the river at the points marked 1,2 and 3 in pencil on the plan.
A vote of thanks to the chairman and also to Mossrs Everett and Beuke was carried by acclamation.
