The installation of His Worship the Mayor took place at noon on Wednesday, Crs Ryder, Rankin, and Satherley being present. In congratulating the Mayor Cr Rankin referred to the fact that Mr Wratt had been returned unopposed, a fact that indicated the satisfaction of the burgesses in his conduct of affairs during the past year.
A circular letter has be received by Mr Moffatt, Chairman of the School Committee, referring to the observance of a holiday tor all scholars on the birthday of Her late Majesty the Queen which is to be henceforth known as Empire Day. The Secretary for Education also suggests that the scholars be assembled in the morning for the purpose oi saluting the flag. The ceremony may be followed by a short address to the children reminding them ot the privileges and duties of citizens oi the Kmpire.
Messrs Thomas Pattie and Henry Green, executors in the estate of the late Charles Green, of Motueka, notify that unless claims are sent in before the Ist of June next, they will not be recognised. A sitting oi" the Stipendary Magistrate's Court will be held on Monday next. School cadet corps are being formed in various part oi the Colony just now and we notice that in one place "dummy" rifles and ammunition have been supplied by the Government. When is the military spirit amongst our local scholars going to be encouraged ? - Messrs Gray and Parker's repiesentative will visit Motueka on Monday and Tuesday next and may be consulted at Brougham's Hotel.
At the last meeting of the Golden Bay Football Union it was resolved that a Motueka and Riwaka rep. team be invited to play a match at Takaka against the Bay reps, on May 23, the Bay team undertaking to return t'ne visit ; also that if the invitation be accepted tne visitors be offered the net gate money. Claude Ball of Blenheim, during the season just over, caught with rod and line, 69 trout. aggregating 632| lbs. 30 of the fish were 10 pounders or over. The heaviest landed was IB|lb. Most of the drapers of Wanganui are to close their shops at 5.30 p.m. during the coming- winter months, a satisfactory experiment in this direction having been made last year.
Discussing the small birds' nuisance in Timaru last week, a member of the .Levels County Council said that the birds were becoming more destructive than ever. In the Point district, he said the winter wheat which had been sown this season had been already verv materially damaged through the birds pulling up the grain just as it commenced to sprout.
