FASHIONABLE MAORI WEDDING.

A Maori wedding .on- a large scale was celebrated at Fellding on the lltb March in the Church of England, the parties being the eldest da.iigiiter of Ramaapakura (Mr R. Drury), of Aorangi, Feilding, and Rangi Mawhete (Mr Win. Moffatt), of Palmerston N. About 300 guests took part in the festivities, who were entertained at xea ting, etc., for several days. The ceremony was carried out in true European fashion albeit a Maori minister officiated and the Putiki choir, took part in the service. A profusion of huia and kiwi feathers together with native mats and ornaments was worn by the. Maoris present in honor ~of the occasion, making an interesting sight. A feature of the “breakfast"’ was the bride-cake which stood some seven feet in height and weighed about 3cwt, anrl was beautifully, ornamented. The gifts to the bride included rare mats and ornaments and bundles of notes subscribed aggregating over ,£IOO Great mini hers of “pakehas” were attracted to the pa during the holidays, as well as those who were invited to the function, and a novel sight was presented at kai-time, with- the large numbers arranged, squatting, before mats set in a long row outdoors, upon which were spread the various viands —tempting and otherwise.
