What might have proved a accident (says the Grey Argus) was happily averted on Wednesday evening by ths skilful and prompt measures taken by men . who had their wits about them. Ash ton's drag, tooled by Harry Lynch, was returning f'-om Point Elizabeth crowded with a picnic party. If not maliciously or with criminal intent, some person negligently reckless, blocked the Seven Mile bridge by placing a 4 x 4 batten across it, the ends being fixed in the side of the bridge at a. height of three feet above the decking. At about 8 p,m. the loaded drag attempted to cross and the team of four horses ran into the obstruction and were bunched together, plunging in their terror to the danger of capsizing the vehicle. Fortunately the skill and coolness of Lynch prevented disaster until some of the gentlemen of the party could alight and securing the horses' heads and removing the timber led the terrified animals over the bridge. The remainder of the journey was accomplished in safety.
