THE AUSTRIAN INFLUX.

The perennial scare that the colony is about to be overrun by aliens cropped up in Auckland the other day, when it was stated that a consignment of 300 Austrian* was on its wav from Dalmatia to New Zealand. There is a tradition that the Austrians have robbed the New Zeatanders of one of their special industries—gum-digging, and inquiries were at once set on foot as to the probability of much more harm being d'>ne. The result did not throw much light on pending immigration, but it brought to the surface some interesting facts regarding the arrivals during the past few months. In No vember, it seems, ten Dalmatians arrived in Auckland, and in the following month forty. Up to date in the new year twenty one have put in an appearance. While these figures may look rather startling, it should be borne in mind that many of these who figure as arrivals are really old identities who are returning to the colony after a visit to their fatherland. Others are men who have spent some time in Australia, and are going to exploit their luck in New Zealand. The Austrian Consul at Auckland states that as most of the arrivals are steady young fellows, who desire to purchase land, their advent is not an evil.
