The s.s. Maori, on her last trip from Wellington to London, carried about 40,000 cases of butter. About onethird of the shipment came from Taranaki. Fifteen hundred more cases of butter from various parts of the colony could have been sent in the vessel if she had had sufficient cool storage. Evidently Madame Melba is going to be the same financial success in Dunedin as in Australia. Several requests sent in for packets of ten guinea family seats were refused because of the intention of the management tr> observe the rule of first come first served when the seats are allotted. A Feilding horse dealer paid LI 600 last month in the purchase of horseswhich have since been transhipped to the South Island. At a recent ploughing match in Wilthire, mingled excitement and amusement were aroused by the unexpected appearance in the field of a young lady, with plough and who expressed her intention of competing in the match. When her time came, she went quietly to work, confining her attention strictly to the business in hand, and with "such excellent results that at the end of the match it was found that the girl competitor had outdistanced all her rivals, having not only done the best work, but bavins finished 14 minatos ahead of any of the other competitors. Gisborne has collected or has in view LSOO for its Captain Cook Memorial Fund. The fund with the Government subsidy of LSOO, therefore now stands at LIOOO.
