The Ashburton Mail understands on| good authority that 4s per bushel has! been refused for new season's wheat, delivery to be given in March, : by a farmer in the Timaru district. A hopeful Oamaru citizen says some of the oat crops in the Waihao district look as if they would yield 120 bushels to the acre. A Gore lady (says the Mataura Ensign) who is in business on her own account received a note the other afternoon to the effect that someone wished to see her over at the railway station, a train being just then on the point of departure. Leaving her shop unattended, she went over to the station, and discovered on her return that her till had been rifled and .£l3 stolen. Mr J. Ord Hume, who acted as judge at the recent band contest held at Master-too, certainly took his gloves off to the business. His notes on some of the soloists were scarifying in their outspokenness. The Steel Trust is over-capitalised. Its "constituent businesses were acquired at the best possible estimate of their worth and passed >n to the public at a huge advance in price. The huge Morgan railroad concerns have to bear a burden of unremunerative capital. The Atlantic Shipping "combine" is an almost ludicrous example of over-capital-isation. There is absolutely no relation [ between the paper value of the company and the actual commercial of the ships which comprise the company's possessions.
