Colonel Lynch, M.P. for Galway and formerly captain of the Irish Brigade" in the Boer War has been found guilty of high treason and sentenced to death. The Te Makarini scholar-ships examinations for Maori boys were held on the 15th and 16th of December last. Five candidates for the senior scholarships of £35 presented themselves at Te Aute, while for the two junior scholarships of £35 each—one for native village school boys and one open scholarship—eight candidates were qualified to compete ; but only seven presented themselves. The junior candidates were distributed as follows: Two were examined at Kawakawa (Bay of Islands), two at Omarumutu (Bay of Plenty), one at Tokaanu (Lake Taupo], one at Whakarewarewa [Lake Rotorua], and one at Lower Moutere, Nelson- The winners in the competition are [l] senior scholarships : Walter Graham, of Te Aute College, who gained 76.8 per cent of the marks; junior scholarships . Paranapa Petera, of Tokaanu Native School, with 70.3 per cent ; and Paul Riwai, of Motueka Lublic School with 68.3 per cent.
We understand the entries for the forthcoming Golden Bay A. and P. Show to be held at Takaka on 2nd February next are likely to be quite as plentiful as on former occasions, and that a successful show is now practically assured. Either Sir Joseph Ward or the Hon. T. Y. Duncan, Minister of Lands, or probably both Ministers, will be present at the Show, and one of them will perform the opening ceremony. Mr R. McKenzie, M.H.R., will also be present, and we understand will afterwards take a run through this part of his electorate, including a visit to Taitapu. —Gulden Bay Argus. No less than thirty-two applications were received the other day by the South Canterbury Board of Education jor the'position of headmaster of the Morven School.
