CRICKET.

The cup match, Motueka v Brooklyn, which took place at the last mentioned place on Saturday, proved a disappointment to those who anticipated game, the wickets of the Motueka players going down like ninepins. A. Askew captained for Brooklyn, and R. Simpson acted in a similar capacity for Motueka, the umpires being Messrs W Boyce and F. Fry, and the scores were entered up by P. Arnold and K. Skilton. The display of cricket was poor, the only noticeable feature of the day being the left handed catch at square leg by R- Batchelor, which smart feat was responsible for dissolving the partnership between the Askews, who were steadily piling up the runs in a manner which was distressing to their opponents. In one innings the Brooklyn cricketers registered 96 runs, and as Motueka only succeeded in accumulating 6 runs and 7 duck’s eggs they, perforce, hadjj to follow on. the second innings closing for 1 5 runs, making a

grand total of 21 runs, the Brooklyn team thus winning by an innings and 75 runs; a result yjbieh ■will ensure the retaining of the banner by this club for another season, unless they are defeated by their Riwaka neighbors. The heat of the day was oppressive, and by reason of continuous showers, the ground at the beginning of the play was sodden, but as the horns wore ou the pitch got better. A capital dinner was provided at Mr J. Duncan’s residence by the home team, and afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies of Brooklyn. We subjoin the Scores : Motueka : F. Meade c Askew 2, b W.
