THE FRUIT INDUSTRY.
In an article on “Fruitgrowing,” the Dannevirke Advocate says:—-It is gratifying to notice that in some parts of th* colony farmers are awakening to the fact that money may be made by raising fruit, notably in the Manawatu and at Hastings. At the latter place the industry is being rapidly developed, and large quantities of fruit of every description are .being sent < ach season to Wellington and the West Coast of this island, Hastings, in fact, bids fair to out-rival Nelson as the centre of a fruit-raising district, and already there are many Targe orchards around that thriving Hawke’s Bay town, one being as much as 100 acres in extent. All varieties of fruit are grown bv Hastings orchardists, some giving special attention to the production of grapes from which wines ai e made. As showing the extent to which the business has been developed at Hastings, it might be mentioned that, a competent authority estimates that 57,000 eases of fruit, of every variety, will be sent front that town this season.
