MOTUEKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council-.was. held on Tuesday evening. Present ' His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. S-. Wxatt), in the chair, Crs Satherley,. Knapp, Simpson, Moffatt, and Ryder Apologies for absence were received from Crs Grooby and Edwards. The following accounts were passed for payment: Boyce-.£l Is 6d, Chapman 19s 6d, W. King £1 8s 4d, Rent account £1 15s, Valuation Charge £l, Town Clerk £5, River Protective Works account‘£2l, R. Bartlett £4 10s.
With reference to the letter .from Mr C. Lewis asking for recommendation from the Council to the Mines Department supporting his application for a prospecting grant it was resolvsd that the Council accede to the request.
Letter received from F. Jones offering to supply dog collars at the rate of 40s per 100 collars. Proposed by Cr Ryder, seconded by CrMoffatt that the requisite number be ordered.
From the Department of labor re statutory half holiday. Dealt with at the special meeting. From the Health Department notifying four cases of measles in the Borough during the month of December. Letter received and it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Moffatt, seconded by. Cr Knapp, That an advertisement be inserted notifying residents of the Borough that it is necessary, in accordance with the Public Health Act to disinfect all bedding, clothing, etc., in cases of infectious diseases.
From the Chief Surveyor, Nelson, returning statement re cost of river protective works for amendment. Proposed by Cr Ryder, seconded by Cr Satherley, That the amount of £4O 15s 2d due iu connection with the protective works be applied for. The Town Clerk having drawn attention to the advisability of procuring a safe in which to keep the Council’s books, etc., it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Ryder, That the Clerk make enquiries re the purchase of a safe.
Cr Moffatt referred to the advisability of having the Council Chambers nearer the centre of the town. He had nothing t> say against the present building, but it was out of the way as far as the bulk of the ratepayers were concerned. It was decided to take no action at present.
His Worship the Mayor tabled the following nc tice of motion, That the number of Councillors be reduced from nine to six, exclusive of the Mayor. Cr Knapp brought up the question of having the names of the streets placed at the corners thereof and suggested that the Town Clerk should write and ascertain the cost of enamel plate-.
Several Councillors were of opinion it would serve to have the names painted on blocks of tin. No action taken. Cr Moffatt drew attention to the state of High Street, especially referring to the growth in the water tables and suggested tarring the same.
After discussion it was resolved, on the moti m *of Cr Ryder, se onded by Cr Satherley, That the Clerk ascertain the cost of sufficient tar to treat the whole of the water tables in High street and if price satisfactory to procure same and proceed with the work at once.
With reference to the arrears of rat as, it was resolved that on Monday next the names of all defaulters be p’aced in a hat and that the v first six drawn therefrom be sued forthwith. This concluded the business.
