Mr A. Manoy advertises for a reli- , able man to drive express and attend to the yard. I Measles are slowly spreadingthroughout the district and it is therefore doubtful if the local schools will open on the date fixed at the last meeting \pj the Motueka School Committee. ■ In" response to an enquiry as to when a start would be made with the proposed bridge at Alexander's Bluff, Mr C. Remnant, junr., last week received a letter from Mr Hursthouse, Chief Engineer of Roads etc., dated 29th of December, informing him that "the whole of the proceedings for acquiring the title to the lands required for the road have not yet been completed. As soon as they are it is proposed to go on with the construction of the bridge." Settlers on the other side of the river have therefore everj 7 reason to believe the bridge will be ava lable for traffic by the end of the present year...... The Registrar of Electors for Motu-■ eka electorate, Mr William Baird, is now sending around notices to those ,vho neglected to vote at the last general election. In view of the Licensing Committee election, to be held on the 25th of March, defaulters will do well to see that their names are reinstated at once in order that they may be enabled to vote. The Railway Department, kelson, invite tenders for the supply a id delivery of birch poles and saplings. Conditions of tender may be seen at the Motueka Star Office. Tenders must be sent in by Saturday next. The half yearly meeting of the

Motueka District Lodge of Oddfellows will be held in the local lodge roop*. on the' 27th instant. ■■'■.

Mr C. Stade, junr., of Upper Moutere, notifies that the newly imported draught stallion will be shown to horse breeders and others at the Motueka Hotel next Saturday. The horse has a splendid pedigree, and Mr Stade hns done a good service to the district by securing the horse for stud purposes. After being detained in the Straits through bad weather the s.s. Nambueca turned up on Saturday and managed to get away in the evening with the sheep collected in the district by Mr Irving, for the Christchurch Meat Co:

Mi- L. D. Easton, who proceeded to Napier as one of the delegates to the annual sitting of the New Zealand Educational Institute, returned to his home last week.

A little intelligent attention should be paid by the postal authorities at Nelson and Wellington to the despatch of mail matter for Motueka. A steamer arrives at Nelson every Sunday morning, and although the Lily may be leaving for here the same "evening business people here never get their letters until Monday afternoon. Again although we have a direct steamer once a week the bulk of the correspondence is dumped into the Nelson mail bags, the result being that replies cannot be sent away by the Manaroa. This is the result of red tape and inability on the part of those in authority to grasp the situation. The scores of the crickot match, Motueka v. Ngatimoti, are crowded out oi this issue. Will appear in oar next. The Napier High Schools, which were established in 1882, have an endowment of over 13,000 acres, in addition to town sections, which has since become very valuable.

On the arrival of the English team of cricketers, the Auckland correspondent of the Times had a chat with Mr P. F. Warner, the captain. Asked as to how he would class the team as compared with an English county eleven, Mr Warner said :—"lt is rather above the average of the county elevens, with the exception of Yorkshire. It is a very good batting side, a fairly good bowling side, and our fielding ought to be excellent. As to the individual members, Hargreaves is one of the best lefthanded bowlers in England. Many people consider that on a hard true wicket he is equal to Rhodes. Thompson, the other professional, is a good all round man. Bosanquet bowls well, and sends down both fast and slow leg breaks. Dawson is another left-hand-ed bowler. He was a great trundler at Harrow and was captain of the Cambridge eleven. Burnip's delivery is fast right-handed. In Taylor and Whatman we have two very good wicket keepers.

The editor of the Auckland Weekly News says a correspondent writes at some length on the vote for prohibition at the recent election. He says he is quite of opinion that it is owing to the loose way the authorities carry on matters recpecting the liquor trade which is causing the people to go for prohibition. The people, as a whole, are, in his opinion, not at all in favour of prohibition, but the present sympathy towards prohibition he looks upon as a snggestive public protest to the way the liquor trade is carried on. In many districts he thinks adulterated drinks are sold freely. As a remedy for existing evils he suggests that the Government should take over the whole liquor traffic traffic throughout the colony, and as such a scheme works well in Russia he fails to see why it should not be successful in New Zealand. During the next three years he says the Government will have to make radical changes else they will loose the i revenue now derived J from liquor trade.
