SCHOOL TREAT.

The annual treat of the Motueka school children was held on the 19th of December, at Miss Fearon’s bush. The weatner was beautifully fine and a cool sea breeze made the day an ideal oue for sports and out door games. At quite an early hour the’ more enthusiastic of the children were on the ground, and by 10 o’clock nearly everybody was merry making at cricket, rounders, or swings. Dinner time came round quickly and the children, sitting in line upon the grass, kept business going briskly for half an hour or so. In the afternoon the sports were‘the shief attraction ; and some fairly good" performances were put up by the older bo3 7 s. The high jump was the most interesting event. The competition in this item was very keen and the gallant attempts of some of the little fellows against their taller opponents called forth cheer after cheer from the spectators. After tea the children were assembled, and, at the invitation of the Headmaster* * pheers were given for Miss Fearon aflrd for Mr R. Rankin, Chairman of the Committee. Then came the order for dismissal which was , slowly and sadly obeyed. The little folk trooped homeward, tired but happy each with his tale to tell of the day’s festivity. The Committee and the staff of the school wish to heartily thank those parents and friends who by their gifts of food or money helped to make the day so successful. Thek*'thanks are especially due to Miss Fearon for permission to use the grounds. It is a matter of regret that the parents did not attend in larger numbers. The best results in any department of school work can never be obtained without the hearty co-operation of the parents ; and it is to be hoped that at the next occasion of the sort they will join with the teachers and the committee and b}- their presence show their interest in the welfare of the children and of the school. Appended is the record of the chief events of the day : -School championshin 100yds : M. Staples Ist, W. Easton 2nd. 220 Hurdles: M. Staples 1, M. Boyes 2. High Jump :H. Everett and M. McGlashen equal. Half mile : M Staples 1, C Knapp 2. Throwing cricket bar. : IT Delaney 1, W Easton 2. Winner of Championship : M. Staples.
