A man was charged at Hastings with cruelty to horses by not supplying them with food and water, and was fined 10s and costs. And yet the case was so bad that an application was made to the Bench for the destruction of the hoi-ses This was. deferred by the S.M., who said he trusted that the defendant would have sufficient humanity to either improve the condition of the horses or to destroy them. And yet a fine of 10s was considered sufficient ! Lord Ranfurly made a presentation last week at Auckland to Captain W. D. Reid, Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Auckland, who dis tinguished himself at the wreck of the Elingamite. The presentation was in the form of a handsome gold watch, suitably inscribed, with a chain and compass, being the gift of the New Zealand and Australian Natives’ Association. The inscription on the watch set forth that the gift was made as a token of ths givers’ recognition' of Captain Reid’s heroic conduct at the wreck.
