THE MOTUEKA WHARF.

Advantage was taken of the opening of the new factory last Thursday by His Worship the Mayor, as chairman of the Motueka Wharf Board to draw the attention of those present to the fact that the extension of the wharf and the erection of larger storage accommodation for shippers of produce was now almost completed and that the work had been carried out without the spending of a shilling of borrowed money, a state of affairs which reflected credit on the management of the wharf in the past. The speaker stated that during the past eleven months produce to the value of .£3.2?,005 2s 6d had gone over tbe wharf, of which <£10,835 16s represented the ftuit exported ; this was exclusive of the produce which had been shipped from Riwaka and al«o that sent overland to Nelson. Mr Wratt said they had reason to be proud of the figures. There was also no doubt the fruit industry had been the means of placing the wharf trustees in their present satisfactory position. He trusted the Wharf “Board would some • lay be in a position to secure a dredge i i order to remove the mud near the wharf, and to give better shipping facilities. Mr Wratt concluded by declaring the wharf and tram line officially opened and jocularly suggested that the directors and members of the Board ride in the trucks to the end of the wharf. Mr H. "Everett, a member of the Wharf Board also spoke on the same subject and said they desired to work hand in hand with Fruitgrowers’ Cooperative Society. The extension of the wharf had been rendered necessary by the great increase in exports which during the past few years had increased fourfold. He was hopeful of having a dredge, ere long, to improve the entrance so as to allow of large boats calling at Motueka. With reference to the direct service, they had to thank Mr McKenzie for his efforts in that direction, and he hoped the service would receive every support at their hands.
