RIWAKA ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was belffonFriffixy evening. Piesent:—Messrs Fry, Pattie, James, Drummond, Coi»k and Holder. The Secretary said the first business would be the election of a chairman in •place? of the late D. Bate. He therefore" called for noannati ms for the position.- ' ‘ ;/ ~ v ;. ; Mr Cook pioposed, seconded by ' Mr Holder, That Mr Drummond occupy the chair. Mr Pattie said he would propose Mr r G. Fry for the position. That gentleman was living near the centre of the road board district, and it was as much to his advantage to see to works being .carried out in the valley as in Brooklyn district. He felt sure that, if elected, Mr Fry. would dp his best for all. Mr James seconded.
The voting being equal, the secretary said he would follow the precedent established, and decide by drawing lots.. The names being placed in the hat,—that of M r Dt naimond was the first drawn, and he was therefore declare*! elected for the balance of the present Board’s term. Upon taking the chair, Mr Drmnjmond said be could scarcely thank the members for electing him, as the Secretary had decided the question. He was quite indifferent as to the result, but now that he had been chosen jhe was willing to do his be.st:for the.ratepayers. He. had been a member of the ••Board,, longer than any other person, /and; up Ope could s»y he had favoured one end of thealistrictV ; more ; than-the other. / V \7; ' ,

Mr James asked if the Board had. anything to do with the charges levied by the ranger ‘for impounding, .cattle. He mentioned that settlers had been charged different fees and complaints were being made about it. After some disciussiop it was resolved Toat the. Ranger’s attention he drawn to the first schedule of the Impounding Act: i;': ..:.; Resolved on- the motion of Mr Frv,, seconded by My Holder, That tiiis Board protests .against any alterati m in the method of spending. Land and Survey Department -grants.... This concluded the pi dinary business. Sitting as a Board of Health,, the complaint of Mr P.. Fry. that ducks were allowed in the ci*eek,.making the water muddy and unfit for, household purposes, it was resolved, oil. the motion of Mr Holder,,.seconded hv Mr James, That owners of ducks be asked to keep the said birds from discolorins the watei in Little Sydney Creek, ag people living on the lower side are unable to use the water.
