BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The- orddmu-y. meeting of the Motuek» Bor&ttgh Council was held on Tu-esdayr evening, Present : His Worship. thei Miayor (Mr J. S. Wr:itt) iu the ehaiiv Crs Trewavas, Thorp, Simpson, Elwards, Satherlev, Grooby, Knapp, Ryder, and Moffatt. Minutes of previous meeting read and adopted. Some discussion took place as to the utility of breaking stones by band, at places distant from main roads and it was eventually resolved, on the motion of Cr Simpson, That no more stones be broken for the time being. The Cleik Waimea County Council wrote intimating that as they were prepared to amicably arrange the matter of contributing towards the upkeep of the Motueka, Riwaka and Jubilee bridges to avoid expense of a commission being appointed, the Council would be pleased to conft*r further on the subject at some convenient time.

Letter received from the Lands arid Survey Department, stating that Government grants must not in future be debited with cost of preparing, plans, travelling expenses, advertising, etc., as such charges would not be allowed.

A litter vv is also received from the Public Trustee confirming the above communication. Litter received from Mr A, R. Edwards furnishing particulars of cost of repairing the late breach iii the river, which amounted to £B-i Os 3d, and asking the Council to contribute one fourth of the c >st. Councillors generally considered the C mncil should contribute its share towards the work which protected the pr >perty of ratepayers. It was ultimately resolved, on the motion of Cr Si-up -'on, seconded by Cr G 'boby, That the Council pay £2l towards the Wnakarewa protective works. A letter was read from the Nelson Chamber of Commerce, inviting the co-operation ot the Council re railway communication-with Christchurch,- and asking the Council to nominate sense person to act on the Committee set up, It was agreed that Cr Thorp be appointed to represent the Borough, of Motueka.

Several minor matters, with -refer-, ence to ruts in roads, dangerous culverts, the practice of driving horses through the streets, etc.,, were. ; dealt with, after which the .Council adjourned.
