VOLUNTEER BALL.

It is generally acknowledged by all who were present at the Institute on Friday - evening that the volunteer ball held, under the auspices of the Motueka. Mounted Rifles—now looked upon ns an annual function—was by* , far and ayvay the most enjoyable one that has been organised. The preliminary arrangements were undertaken by a strong committee of the corps, with Corporal L. Manoy as Secretary*, and credit is due to them for the faithful and satisfactory carrying out of all 'the minor details which have to- be ; attended to befoi-e the. night of the ball. With the aid of bunting, bayonets, saddles, and other etceteras, effectively relieved by ferns and evergreens, the interior of the hall wa/f^jdeasingly transformed, the taste and skill shown by those entrusted with, the decorative work being favorably commented on by those present. Above the proscenium were the words “Welcome, Returned Troopei-s,” for advantage was taken of the.social assembly to welcome members of the corps yvho had returned from active service in South Africa, there being present Captain Deck, Sergeant Deck, Corporal Goodman. Farrier-Sergeant. Duncan, Troopers Brooker, Scott, Boyes, Hursthouse, Kerr, Turner, P. Hall, P. Bate. The stage was occupied by members of the Orchestral Society, Messrs A. Manoy (piano), Miller (violin), Avery (cornet), and Cana van (’cello), who played excellent dance music, Mrs Johansen. M isses E. Boyes, Brougham ami l~)e-' sauna is kindly playing the' extras, Dancing commenced at eight o’clock with the Grand March, led off by Lieutenant and Mrs Batchelor-, and was continued with animation till about three o’clock on Saturday morning when the twenty six dances appearing on the programme- were exhausted. During the early part, of the evening His Worship the Mayor, Mr J. S. Wratfc, addressing Captain Deck and the. returned troopers, extended a hearty welcome to them, which was acknowledged, at a later stage, by Corporal Goodman on behalf of his ’ponuades. A capital supper laid in the adjacent hall, which was in charge of the Misses Parker, and about half way through the programme a. halt was called for the purpose partaking of .he good things provided. The masters of ceremonies, Lieutenant Batchelor, Sergt. Major Trolove, . Sergts Fo.vler and Chittenden, did all in their power to make the evening enjoyable, and with the good floor prepared tr.eir efforts were crowned with success.
