The high schools of the colony are not, according to. Mr Barelajq in a satisfactory position. In the first place, the fees paid by pupils attending them only amount to X 24,792, and he raised the question as to whether it was worth while to have the symmetry of our educational system marred by these schools being in an anomalous position for the sake of such a small sum, and whether ’it would not be better to make them free. Then, again, he thought provision should be made for periodical examination of such schools by Government officers, land finally he complained that in some cases in the lower forms the work of the primary schools was duplicated The Hon. C. H. Mills said the Elucatton Department was considering the whole matter, and the Minister for Education hoped to bring it up for consideration by Cabinet bef rre’loag •
