MOTUEKA GYMNASTIC CLUB.
j Considering; the short notice given there was. ati excellent attendance on J •Tbiirsdaynight of ladies: and gentlemen interested in the formation of a /gymnasticclub imMotueka. ' 1 Dr Adams, who was voted to the' chair, explained the-'-’ object ‘of .the meeting, and after some discussion it was unanimously decided That a gymnastic Club of ladies arid gentlemen be formed to be called - the M otueka Gymnastic Club. The following officers were eleeted - -President, Dr Deck ; Vice Presidents, Revs. John.-ton a id Wills, Dr, Adams, His Worship.the Mayor, (Mr J. S. Wratt), Messrs A. Manoy, F. Symes, R. Rahkin, L W. KLerr (of Brown arid KLerr) and R. Staples; Committee, Misses Brougham, Gilbert and Hughes, Messrs Harris, Jenkins, Greensill and Li. Manoy; Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, Miss Ruth Deck. Mr Fitzsimmons was appointed Captain. . Messrs Jerinens and Stephens, of Nelson were present at the meeting, and we understand the latter has consented to come over occasionally and give instruction in the use of the appliances. The Committee met on Friday night, when it was decided that two nights a week be set apart for practice, one for ladies, and one for gentlemen ; that subscription for the remainder of the season, about three months, be five shillings for gentlemen, the ladies’ classes to continue as heretofoie.. Here, says M. A .P. is a portrait of the Queen by an American girl. It strikes me as delightful in its naivete, its frankness is charming We don’t go to the theatre tn witness a play, but to see the audience. I thought we were going to be disappointed and not see her after all, but just befoi-e the curtain went up she and the Ring came in with some other people. She is rather tall and very sweet looking, but oh, mbst awfully thin. She has lovely blue eyes, with a shine in them like a baby’s, but I was disappointed a bit, for I tli ught she had golden hair. To he quite candid, her hair is of quite a mahogany tint, but it was charmingly coiffured, and showed off her diamonds beautifully. She looked very young and girlish, but 1 think she had the saddest face I’ve evei seen. She listened very attentively, and when she smiled, you felt as though you wanted to have a good rousing cry. I don’t wonder one bit that people in England love her, for they simply can’t help it.”
A sale which establishes a record price even in this district (says a telegram from Warrnambool, Victoria, to the Melbourne Argus), where large amounts are paid for land, has just been completed. The balance of the Yange?}- Park E-tate. consisting of about 902 acres, situated about six miles from Warrnambool, was disposed of privately, at prices which* to those unacquainted with the marvellous fertility of the soil, must appear almost fabulous. Nearly every block, was bought by tenants who have been leasing the land for several years, and who, though paying a rent of from £:2 to .£3 per acre had made sufficient money to pay one-third of the purchases in eashi and did not ask for long terms. During the past season one tenant obtained a crop of 7.j§ tons: per acre, whkdi he sold at £3 ]os per ton, or a gi-dss return of £24 10s per acre. When the total amount realised for the .land was calculated it was found that, the purchasers were paying £36,+ Is 9 19s lOd for 702 acres 11, perches «5f land, an average of £sl 9s per acre.
