A resident of Greytown this year sold no less than 12 cwt of pears from two trees in his orchard, leaving him a profit of £ls after the fruit had been sold to the local fruiterers at wholesale price. This would mean large returns from an acre of ground. With trees planted 25ft apart it would take 100 trees, which, at the same rate, would show a profit of £750. A boy named Hennessy, residing ®in Foxton, received severe burns on the face through brilliantine, with which he was cleaning a carbine near a lamp, exploding.
