DISORDERLY TROOPERS.
One of the recently-returned contingent men, by name James Ryan, appeared in uniform at the Magistrate’s Court last week, and pleaded Guilty to a charge of having been drunk and disorderly in Lambton-quay last week. A sergeant and two or three other troopers in uniform were present in Court. Mr Haselden, S.M., said He was very sorry to see one of the South African Contingent men in the dock charged with drunkenness. He knew there might be some excuse for excess, because of the excitement of the returning, but, speaking with some knowledge and a deep feeling of what was due from and to the men, he would give theta a word of warning. We were all very proud, his Worship added, of our South African Contingents, but we felt very keenly how disgraceful it was for men to trade upon the glory of §their "fellows, to loaf round town, and to frequent bars and talk over the doings of themselves and their comrades. A very little of that would wipe away all the glory and tarnish all the brightness of what had gone before, When he saw troopers loafing about m this manner he felt inclined to go up to them and speak as seriously as he was doing now. Accused would be convicted and discharged. Wellington Post.
