At the social on Wednesday evening, Mr Hursthouse said he had, prior to his contemplated holiday, severed his connection with all public bodies with the exception of a very important one, namely his position as Corresponding Secretary of the Motueka District Lodge of Oddfellows. Mr Hursthouse went on to speak of the immense value of benefit societies and urged those present to join some friendly society. Sergeant Major Healey has been giving rifle and discipline instruction to the members of the Motueka Mounted Rifles during present week. There have been very good musters and the members received valuable hints from the Sergeant Major, who is a drill instructor par excellence and popular withal.
