Anecdotes from South Africa are numerous. A Scotch merchant in one of the Orange Colony towns was deploring the fact that no ‘ stalwart Scotch Highlander ’ had so far come there. One day a train stopped at the little station with and escort of Gordon Highlanders. Great w ? as the joy of the Scot when he saw a great burly Highlander making his way to his store. He shook him heartily by the hand, and greeted him —‘ Mon, a’m pleased tae meet ye; whit pairt o’ Scotland dae ye come fra ? ’ ‘ Tipperary, sor,’ was the reply, in a brogue that broke the storekeeper’s heart.
