SUPPLY OF VINE CUTTINGS AND FRUIT TREES.

It has been the custom of the Department of Agriculture each year to distribute gratis surplus vine cuttings and surplus fruit trees from its stations. Many pex-sons who have applied for them, however, have taken very little trouble with what was supplied tdthem. It has now been decided to discontinue this free distribution, and in future to make a small charge for cuttings' and trees. The charges will be as follows : ---Yine cuttings, 5s per thousand ; i"ooted vines, L 5 per thousand ; apples, 6d each ; pears, plums, cherries and apricots, 9d each ; figs, 4d each ; currants and gooseberries, 2s per dozen ; raspberries, Is per dozen ; walnuts, 9d each. These prices are f.o.b. on the train at the railway station nearest Momohaki and Wairangi. No charge will be made for packing, but the recipients will have to pay the railage charge. No order for less than 5s worth of cuttings or trees will be received, and the money must accompany the order. The idea of the department is to place the cuttings and trees within reach of bona fide planters, while at the same time discouraging those who might have no real intention of properly caring for what they Ifetained without cost. Th 6 system now adopted is on the lines which have all along been followed by the poultry division of the department in the supply of birds and eggs. —N.Z. Times.
