GARDEN PARTY.

It was a venturesome undertaking to hold a garden party during the fall of the year, when the days are short and the weather is often changeable, but the success which attended | the one held on Wednesday afternoon, under the management of the ladies of the Methodist Church, must have been' distinctly encouraging to the promoters. As previously stated the object was to supplement the funds now being raised to renovate the parsonage, and we are pleased to learn that the said fund will benefit to the extent of about £7. There was a very good attendance of the public who were, no doubt, anxious to witness what was certainly a novelty in Motueka—a ladies’ cricket match, which afforded a great deal of amusement to the onlookers, both inside and outside of the cricket ground, where the garden party held. The costumes of the players were original, vailed, and in some cases most attractive. The uresses which call for special mention were those worn by Mrs W. Moffatt, who appeared as the Motueka Star ; Miss Hyland, Old Maid; Miss Delaney, Edwards’ Harlene; Misses Egginton, Scotch Lass ; Cairns, Butcher Boy; Moffatt, Signalman ; Drummond, nurse ; Elsie Drummond, granny; Ethel Delaney, Topsy; Huffam, Shepherdess. In addition to the cricket match, other popular games were played ; lollies were scrambled for “der kiddies” ; and for the more sedate afternoon tea was dispensed at the Kiosk, which was under the superintendence of MesdameS'-W. Boyce, McGlashen and Simpson. Altogether, a most enjoyable afternoon was spent.
