His Worship the Mayor, Mr Hurst house, received the following telegram from Sir J. G. Ward on Thursday : “Very pleased to be able to inform you that the response to representations, made by me, the Federal Government of Australia have to-day agreed to allow New Zealand letters to be admitted to the Commonwealth at xhe pennyrate. This news, lam sure will be read with satisfaction by you, as Australia was the only British country which, so far, had refused to agree to N ew Zealand universal penny postage.” The boys at the front have nicknamed De la Rey “ Rontgen Ray,” because of his penetrating power in getting through the British lines. The amount of uncollected Wellington rates at end of financial year (31st ult.) was .£6175. The Wairoa County Council is modest. It has made demands for grants from the Government this year amounting to .£30,600. *** Subscription to MOTUEKA STAR : Three Shillings and, Sixpence a Quarter, which may begin any time
