The Palmerston correspondent of the New Zealand Times says :—The great improvement which has taken place during the present season in the quality of bacon pigs in this district is a direct result of the introduction of blood to local herds. A great point in the Tarn worth, apart from the suitability of his carcase for bacon purposes, is that, properly treated, he can be turned off" as a prime baconer in four and a half months, but he must be fed from the jump. There should be no such thing as a store Tamworth. He must be» fed, too, first thing in the morning and last thing at night. With the Tarn worth strain, fed and treated properly, there is a wealth in pigs that farmers have not yet realised.
Among the acts of the Senate was a decision to enable the degree of M.D.
to be given without the taking of a preliminary literary degree. Another important step was the creation of honours in law. The order will now be Bachelor of Laws, Honours in Law, and Doctor of Laws. Honours must be taken before the doctors can be obtained. The prescription for the "doctorate has also been changed. A candidate will moreover, now be able to take all that is necessary for solicitor in the second instead of the third examination, leaving Roman law and international law to the end. He can become a solicitor without taking any of the compulsory barrister work, and he can divide the subjects into two parts. The changes made are in the direction of simplifying the work required from law students. This has been done chiefly bp re-arrangement> and not by letting them do less *work than befoie. Details of the changes ,vill be made known in due course.
The Wellington Sun says: The matter of trade with South Africa haslately been engrossing public attention during the last few days. A few year ago it w r ould have been almost treasonable for a Government to engage in what the Government of this Colony has engaged of late years. To establish for instance a Labour Bureau, to have people employed on co-operative works direct by the State. To have a Servants' Registry Office ; to have the State lending money to the people. All this a few years ago would have been looked upon with a feeling almost of horror. In fact, some who made such proposals were termed dreamers, and were regarded as a danger to Society, but the progress has been made. We go on making Advances to Settlers, we go on with the work of inspection and grading of produce, and with the teaching of people how to grow the best produce and how best to manufacture.
