The hop crop this year is a very light one, farmers evidently have not given the gardens their usual attention, and the yield altogether will fall a long way short of the average.- -Takaka .News. Mr Otto Haase, who successfully conducted the JBelgrove Hotel for some years, took possession of the Telegraph Hotel, at Takaka, on Saturday last. Mr Haase is a genial host, and should do a good business. Last Thursday’s Takaka News says: —“ As a result of several meetings of sheep farmers it was decided last week that it would pay the owners to combine and send their sheep to Canterbury ; and accordingly Messrs T. Manson, H. Manson, J. Lindsay, L>. Barnett, J. Rogers, and R. Hyland were engaged to drive a mob through A number of settlers present at the meeting promised te send their sheep and others afterwards decided to do the same, with the result that yesterday morning the 5 drivers took away 3,600 sheep, and it' is expected that more will be gathered on the way up the Valley. We believe that this action on the part of the settlers has already had the effect of forcing outside buyers to offer higher prices.” The sheep mentioned above passed through Motueka on Saturday last, on the way to Canterbury. The drovers expect to reiaclr their destination in about a ■inonth’s time. A new boy had come to school fresh from the country, and the ready ‘Sir’ and ‘Miss’ of the city child was quite unknown to ' him. “What’s your name?” queried the master, “George Hamilton.” “Add sir to that, bry.” “ Sir GeoTge Hamilton,” came the unexpected reply. Everyone roared, a.nd even the master relaxed into a smile, hut the boy from that date remained Sir George.” The peculiarity about this story is that it is true.
