At a meeting of the Westport Chamber of Commerce, held last Monday evening, Mr James Colvin, in referring Mr Roderick McKenzi?. said he “ was glad to see Mr McKenzie present. He had more experience and influence than the speaker; indeed there was no man in the House with more influence on the Government, than the member for Motueka,, and he had always proved himself a friend of the Buller district.” f
The Rev Mr Wilson, the newly appointed Presbyterian Minister for Riwaka, was present at the harvest thanksgiving social held in Motueka on Wednesday evening: He was cordially welcomed by the Revs Thos. Johnston and Wills. Mr Wilson thanked the speakers for their kind expressions of goodwill. The tennis tournament Riwaka versus Brooklyn will be played at Riwaka mi Saturday. The match is exciting considerable interest, aim it is expected the game will be keenly contested. During the social on Wednesday evening, the Rev Mr Wills had to coinplain of the disturbance that took place at the back of the hall. It is a pity offenders cannot show more consideration for the rest of the audience when they attend public gatherings. We might also state that, in view of a possible rise in the cost of lubricants, the hall authorities should forthwith eiuer into negotiations for the acquisition of one bottle of machine oil, the said oil to be dilligentlv and effectively applied to the hinges of the front door. At present it is a tussle Door versus Singer and in every encounter the singer comes off second best. We have never beard what has been termed the “ shriek of a lost soul,” but if it is like the agonised, heart tending emissions of the aforesaid door then it is in deed and in truth fearsome. A dance is to be held at Riwaka next month, the proceeds of which will go towards the public school piano v fund. Next day a cricket match is to take place, the “ boys ” at one of the jWjley sawmills having challenged a team. Jas'Suisted, the worth}’ Secretary of the Westport Harbor Board, r says the Buller River is the Amazon ■ or New Zealand. The trustees of the Motueka Methodist church have accepted the tender of Mr A. Smith for renovating the interior of their place of worship in High Street. J The Premier, in a letter to a Wairarapa volunteer officer, expresses the opinion that a tenth New Zealand contingent will not be necessary.
