Sentence to death was passed at Norfchamptin Assizes lately on Alec. Olaydon, a shoe operative, for murdering his wife. Prisoner killed the woman with a formidable file while she lay asleep in bed on a Sunday morning. The murderer then slept by the corpse for two hours, and afterwards cooked so.me eggs, had breakfast, and went for a long country walk, eventually surrendering to a village constable and confessing tile crime. Messrs Riley and Richards, the contractors for the delivery of material on the various dredge building sites on the Aorere, are actively engaged getting the stuff away from the wharves. It is expected that hundreds of tons of machinery and other material will be landed here in the next few weeks.— Collingwood Argus. A whale, 10ft in length, commonly known as the ‘‘buttle-nose,” was captured in the Pourakino, some three miles from Riverton, by a picnicking party of ladies and gentlemen recently, after two hours’ exciting work. The whale was stunned in shallow water, and a rope made fast to its fin, but befora the final capture was brought about an exciting tow of fully five miles took place. A story is being told of a well-known French Egypthologist who recently arrived at Marseilles with a Royal mummy. The Custom House officials, on inquiry, were informed that the case contained a Pharoah. The tariff list was searched in vain for any such article as a Pharoah, and the officer decided to levy duty on the highest scale in order to be on the safe side. The tcientist accordingly paid for Pharoah as “ dried fish !”
