CORRESPONDENCE.

—o To The Editor. Sir : Having had my say, I do not intend to take any advantage by having the " last word ;" therefore I shall not make any comments on Mr Mof- , fat's letter, but as he has (from information alleged by him to have been given by members of the Board) given publicity to statements reflecting on my actions in connection with certain Government grants, I think that in all fairness he should also give publicity to the names of such members who supplied him with such base and unreliable information. I am etc., Daniel Bate. Riwaka Nov 2nd 1901.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir : In reference to a proposition now before the public, re requesting Government to subsidise a steamer to run between this port and Wellington, it is to be hoped that something will not be done that the settlers and others here, especially members of the Motueka branch of the Nelson Fruitgrower's Union, will be sorry for. An arrangement as to rate of freight would, of course, have to be made, but one important item to be w T atched is the ownership or agents for that steamer. It would not be wise to support a company that might have interests in opposition to the Fruitgrower's Union, for .a company in that position would naturally consider its own interests before those of the latter, and it is most desirable that the Union should use its offorts in securing the subsidy for a boat whose owners or agents are not more interested in the handling of one shippers goods than those of another. I am, etc., Member N.F.G.U, Motueka Nov 4th, 1901.
