EXPERIMENT ON FRUIT TREES.
Mr Allen, the New S nth "Wales Government fruit..expert, has recently been carrying out a series of experiments in oi"der to .ascertain the best and cheapest method of clearing fruit trees of red and other scales. The object was not only to ascertain which treatment w-as most efficacious, and at the same time reasonably inexpensive, but to satisfy growers themselves on this point. Hence a number of orchardists were, invited .to watch the work throughout. One hundred diseased trees were selected, and twenty of each were treated in different ways, the chief methods being fumigation, resin and soda spray, keros3r.e emul ion,and fish oil. At the fixal meeting thirty of the growers who had been watching the experiments -were present, and the unanimous opinion was that resin and soda wash and fish oil did the best work in spraying, but fumigation was ahead of any spraying, One prominent grower writes that fumigation is ahead of all pest killers, and in time must be universal throughout Central Cumberland.
