We give a final reminder of the grand sacred and secular concert, which is to be held in the Institute Hall to-morrow evening, The final rehearsal went off very smoothly and indications point to a bumper house. The-charge for admission is low, and it will be seen that special concessions are given to families. At the conclusion of the public meeting, in connection with the New Zealand Farmer's Union held on Wednesday last, the committee selected to canvass the district met and unanimously elected Mr Stuart Wratt chairman. Mr Wratt lias since been busy intervewing the farmers in his territory with the most enc mraging results.
The section of road near the Jubilse Hal], Lower Moutere, is in a bad state and not all safe for vehicular traffic. The road is altogether too narrow to allow'of traps passing each other. "When they meet there, it means that one has to be pulled aside and in doing so the driver stands a risk of upsetting the trap. We would suggest to the Waimea County Council the advisability of widening the road, which can be done at little expense. The Council's workmen are now engaged in formation work in the locality, and if instructed could at once remedy the defect. A new iron gate, which has long >een badly needed, will shortly be e.•ected at the entrance to the Recreation Ground. This, will be a great convenience to those carting material to and from the stone breaker.
A meeting of the Trustees of the Wesleyan Church is to be held at an early date 11 consider the advisability tf at once proceeding to renovate the Chmvb, There is something over «£2O in. "\ind for the work, but it is expected effort will have to be made to collect shall be pleased to learn that those interested are successful in having the necessary repairs and painting before Christmas comes. We learn that an informal meeting of the Motueka Borough Council took place on Saturday evening, to consider matters pertaining to the proposed Motueka Harbor District. The Mayor read a letter he had received from Mill. McKenzie, M. H. R. y stating that it was proposed the new board should consist of the Mayor of the Borough,
and the members of the Moutere an,d Metueka rid:ngs< f the Waiinea < sounty The meeting was < f opinion that this representation would he sufficient for the time being, but that provision should be made in the Act that further representation could be g veil at any time, on an order by the Governor in Council, if found desirable that the number of members should be increased. It is satisfactory to note that the attitude of the Borough Council, in thus disposing of the master and unanimously coinciding with Mr McKenzie's suggestions, completely puts out of court the contention of those who have held that the Council desired to secure control. The bona fides of the Mayor and Council are thus established and the outlying districts will now realise that the Council and the people of Motueka recognise their claim to equal representation. Although no detailed information has been supplied us as yet, we may assume that the new Harbor District will consist of the two ridings mentioned and the Borough of Motueka. The enclownments are to be the foreshore of the Borough, extending towards Nelson to the boundary of the Motueka Electorate. The Riwaka foreshore is evidently not included. Mr P. G. Moffatt, of the Cash Store, notifies in our advertising columns that he has for sale Seller's washing machines, with wringer complete : also Seller's knife, fork and spoon cleaning machine. The washing machines are offered at reduced rates for one month only. The usual monthly meeting of the Motueka School Committee will be held this evening. Although we printed a large iium ber of extra copies of the last issue of the Motueka Star, which contained the report of the fancy dress ball and the Backwater road the supply was quickly exhausted. Such a state of things is gratifying to the proprietors of the Star, and is strong evidence that their efforts to publish a. newspaper worthv ot the district are beinsr reco«--rased. There is said to be a difference of opinion in connection with a new clause, or covenant, in the fresh leases between the Trustees of Whakarewa and their tenants. Consequently the leases are not signed by the contracting parties, although the time specified (during September) has expired, We trust that a satisfactory settlement of the matter will be arranged. We hear that some of the wattle on the experimental plantation at the Domain has been frostbitten. It is not known whether the young plants will recover. Mi- <T. R. Macdonald, secretary of the Nelson Acclimatisation Society notifies in our advertising columns that licenses for trout fishing can be obtained on application to Mr H. E. Gilbert, Postmaster. It is worthy of record that on the 7th of October, during the past four years, sharp frosts have been experienced in Nelson, we publish the information for the benefit of our leaders over the Bay; a month hence possibly, the Nelson papers will chronicle the fact for the benefit of their subscribers. The work of widening the road neatMr H. Wratten's, decided on at last meeting of the Borough Council, is being done by the Council's workmen instead of as was proposed, by Mr Wratten, the latter being unable to undertake it. TAILORING.-—Mr O. G.Bird, representing Messrs Everett Brothers, of Nelson; is at present in Motueka for the purpose of booking orders for tailor-made, up-to-date and fashionable clothing. He has a large range of samples, including a choice selection from England. Mr Bird will visit settlers in Riwaka, Pangatotara, Ngatimoti, and other districts. Address : Holyoake's Hotel.—Advt.
