As there seems to be some misunderstanding amongst local volunteers, as to the conditions upon which they can resign from the corps, we reprint the following from the " Defence Act, 1896."' Section 53 of that Act says—- " Any volunteer may after one (since altered to three) year's service, except when on actual military service, quit his corps on complying with the following conditions :—(1). Giving to the commanding officer of his corps three months' notice hi. writing of his intention %"> quit the corps, such notice to terminate during the months of January'or July cf each year. But any volunteer who may desire his discharge for the purpose of leaving a district or the colony shall be entitled to receive the same upon giving one fortnight's notice, and fulfilling the conditions hereinafter provided. (2). Delivering up in good order, fair wear-and-tear only excepted, all arms, clothing, andappintments, being public property or property of his corps, issued to him. (3). Paying all money due or becoming due by him under the rules of his corps, either before or at the time or by reason of his quitting it. And thereupon he shall cease to be a volunteer." — By a rule of the corps any member who does not earn his capitation becomes liable for the cost of his uniform, and a member who leaves in July cannot earn capitation.—Takaka News. The Takaka Racing Club's annual race meeting is fixed for January 11th, the day after the A. and P. show. The stakes have again been raised for most of the races, the total amount to be paid now reaching £74. The program should be good enough to induce outside owners to send their horses here, and good entries are therefore expected, and this of course means a good day's racing.—News. The Napier Woollen Mills are to be erected at Ohepto, where a site of acres has been secured. The removal of the plant from Invercargill has begun, and it* is expected that the mill •will be at work next February.
