—o — During the past few days, the "Reaper, whose name is Death," has made his presence felt in at least three homes m this district, cutting down here a loving mother, there an aged patriarch, not even failing to call away one full of promise and just entering upon a Useful and honorable career. It is with sincere regiet we have to eh- •nicle the death of Mrs Hursthouse-, the wife of our respected Mayor, which tool-: place early on Monday morning. When it became known in town yesterday, a, wide spread feeling of sorrow was evinced, and flags on the -various buildings in High Stieet were placed at half-mast. The surrounding circumstances of the death were rendered' more melancholy by the absence of His Worship the Mayor, who had gone to Wellington on public busiuess, and who did not hear the sad news till the steamer, upon which he was returning home, reached Nelson. We learn that Mrs Hursthouse was struck down oil Sunday morning by a seizure, rendering hex- unconscious till the vital spark quitted its earthly frame. The de ceased was the second daughter of the late Captain Fearon, formerly of the merchant service, whose family is well known and held in high esteem through out the district. She was the mother of four sons and four daughters, who, with the bereaved husband will have the sympathy of settlers throughout the district and the On my generally. The late Mrs Hursthouse was of a kind and charitable disposition, sympathetic and helpful t> all in distress, and her death will be severely felt by all whqj enjoyed her friendship.
