TUAKAU.

The Maori settlement of Tuakau is on the banks of the river Waikato, about 45 miles from Auckland. The name of the tribe residing here is Ngatipou, and the name of their Chief, Tomo, — a veiy obliging and well-disposed man. This Chief and his people lately employed parties to erect a flour mill at their village for the sum of; £360. A legal document was drawn up by a Solicitor, embodying the terms agreed to, and signed by the millwrights; but it was ascertained subsequently, that the erection of the mill would bej more expensive than was anticipated. An appeal was made to the Chief, who most generously! handed over to Messrs. Cox & Chandler, One Hundrd Pounds Extra. Such praiseworthy conduct surely requires no comment.
