We regret lo slate thai Captain Kotch, of the barque Jasper, of New Itedlbrd, who sailed from Auckland, on a whaling voyage, on the 9th of February last, has been unexpectedly compelled lo return to port in consequence of his ship having sprung a leak, whilst cruising oil the equator, on the Ist ultimo.' From that period the leak continued 10 increase ; ami il lias been entirely owing to the unflagging exertions of Captain Kotch and Ids ship's com pany that (the pumps going constancy for eight ami Iwenly days) they have beeii able to bring ship and cargo safely into port. liven since (lie vessel lias arrived ill harbour the leak has continued unabated ; so much so that il hasbeen deemed advisable to thrum a sail and pass it under her hows. This measure has been attended with considerable success ; and will lighten the labour of pumping unlil the sliijt rail be discharged and repaired. Capt. Kotch basinet with but imlilferent success since leaving Auckland, having obtained but 100 barrels of sperm 011 in addition to the 710 barrels with which he cleared out in February. The following are llie names and particulars of vessels reported by the Jasper: On 15th .March lust, on iheline, spoke the Martha, of New Hedford, Capt. Chase, 50 mouths out, MOO barrels sperm ; and the Norman, of Nantucket, Capt. Chase, 17 months out, SfiO barrels sperm; also, the Slar, of Sydney, Capt. Fury, shortly after leaving Auckland. On June 20ih, in long. 100 ° west, on llie Line, spoke the; Atlantic, of Nantucket, Gapt. Gardner, out ,V> moulhs, 1200 barrels sperm, leaking badly, homeward bound. A very valuable addition to llie shipping of the port of Auckland has just been made by the purchase (by .Messrs. Salmon and Co.) of the brig I leather Hell, which, in command of our old acquaintance, Captain Jones, arrived in harbour, on llie -itli inst. from Sydney, from wheuceshe sailed on the 22nd ultimo. The Heather Hell is of the class now well known under the designation of Aberdeen clippers; and, if we may julgc from a casual and distant glanceof her lines, she is not only a handsome example of the class, but probably the finest brig sailing out of this port.
