Tera te tahi tangata, i haere atu kite tata wahie mo tana ahi; haerere kau ano nga kanohi, ka kitea atu e ia te tahi Neke, e takota ana; e ngaua noaiia ana e te haupapa : ka oho te aroha o roto o te tangata ki taua Neke ; ka tangohia paitia e ia, ki tona uma; a, kawea ana kite taha ote kapura ahinaina ai; ka rongo te Neke i te mahanatanga, ka tahurihuri i roto i te whare kite noa i te tahi o nga tamariki o taua tangata, ka pau a te peke atu a—ngaua ana. Ka mutu te tangata rate whai i ona wahie, ka tomo mai ki roto ki tona whare ; titaha kau ano ki raatau, ka pono puna kanohi ki tana tamaiti e takoto ana, kua mate ke : Na! ka aue te tangata ra! ka oho te whakatakariri ote tangata—ka puwherowhero nga mata—a ka rapu tona ngakau kia ea te matenga o tana tama! Ka kapo te ringa o te tangata ra kite titaha ; kihai i ata tatn te koinga, ka poru pu taua Neke*. rere ke ana te matenga, rere ke ana te hiku. Te Ritenga. Ka aroha, ka atawhai, te tahi i a koe : kaua aua painga, a whakahokia kite kino.
