; ANNUAL SOCIALS

The annual social at Waseby of the Presby terian Church was held on Friday last. There was a good attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent by one and all. The Rev. G. D. Falconer presided, and during the evening apologised for the absence of the Rev. A. V. G. Chandler and for some of the members of the Ranfurly choir, who recency been bereaved by the war. The proceedings were opened with

praise and prayer and a selection by Mr Jack's The following musical items we're given:—Solo, Miss M. Lemm; anthems (4), choir; recitation, Miss D. Morgan; solo, Mr Ball; solos, Misses M. Morgan, T. Moore, R. . Baxter, Rev. W. T. Drake; recitation,/' 5 Mr Blair; cornet solo. Mr H. Moore/ ; During the evening the Rev. W. % Drake gave a most appropriate address on the present day problems that/Effect the world. He referred to anient powerful kingdoms that flourished-and ~ faded away, such as Assyria, 'Babylonia; Mongolia, and later Rome and I Spain. was something wrong ' i id the principles which actuated these nations that kept tham from lasting through the test uf generations. Some - were founded on force and even on justice, but these principles did not * make them: enduring. What fie urged was that self-sacrifice was the ( principle for a nation, as well as individuals to be guided by. , This was the principle that actuated Jesus.

A. very welcome interval was devoted to refreshing the inner man, the 'good things provided' by the ladies . being much enjoyed.

Before the Benediction Mr Hugh Wilson proposed a vote of thank to all' those whp had assisted towards the "successs of the social ■ "

The Ranfnrly congregation hei<? their annual social on Monday evening, .when practically the same programme was given. Owing*.to the wet weather the. attendance was not very large.
